Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 US National Championship pilot invitation.
The Championship is open to certified pilots in the United States who are in good standing and are in possession of both Balloon Federation of America (BFA) and Hot Air Competition Division (HACD) membership cards. The field for this year’s event will be limited to 40 participants and March 19th is the application deadline.
The 2018 US National Hot Air Balloon Championship is expected to take place in Shreveport Bossier City, Louisiana. The BFA has credited Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission (SBSC) with the organization of these events. The SBSC is providing a complimentary hotel room for pilots with check in on Tuesday, July 10 and check out Sunday, July 15.
For those pilots wishing to arrive early, you may do so at your own expense, Space may be reserved via the application found on the link below. If you wish to arrive early or want to book crew room(s), please indicate as much on the Hotel Accommodations portion of the Pilot Application Form.
Once your application has been accepted for entry in the championship, you will be sent an
acceptance letter along with your hotel contact information.
Propane will be available on the mornings of July 9 & 10 for pilots arriving early and wishing to engage in practice flights. Pilots will be charged a flat fee of $40 for each fill on these dates. You will find a tentative schedule of events is enclosed in the application documents.
The competitive event officially starts with pilot registration and a compulsory general briefing on Tuesday, July 10. Events conclude with the final competitive flight and awards brunch on Sunday, July 15.
Prizes will be awarded as follows: $20,000 is guaranteed, plus a pre-event pole ring toss of $10,000 for the DeSoto Challenge making the total prize package worth $30,000.
The selection process for the competitor’s spots is fully explained in the BFA Competition Rules, Regulations, Policies and Procedures. Pilots who are registering are expected to remain and participate for the entire duration of the event as required by the HACD Code of Conduct. *With the exception of the following: family emergencies, medical situations and other obvious events outside of the pilot’s control, early departure from the championship will incur financial penalties.
